I left the property on which I had a signed a ten month assured shorthold tenancy agreement for before the contract has started. My landlord found someone for the first 5 months of the contract but has now demanded i pay him the sum of £450 to release me from the contract. I do not have the money at the time and has thretend to take me to court.

If this is the usual type of assured shorthold tenancy agreement, liability will be joint and several with your co tenant. Thus any thing which he does not pay will be claimable against you.
