My wife and I have been living at my father's house for a couple of years, as he is paralysed from a stroke and needs 24 hour care. My brother has placed a recording device in the house and for a period of 8 months has been taping all conversations held between us and with my father and friends. His aim was to blackmail me, as the recordings gave him access to confidential business matters, although I have no proof of this. He is using the tapes in order to try and cause maximum embarrassment to my wife and I. Is there anything we can do to stop this?

There are number of issues here. Firstly it is totally illegal to place a recording device in property occupied by another as has been done by your brother. If it is for the purpose of trying to extort money from you, that will be a criminal matter of great severity. As such it should be reported to be police. If there are problems in preventing you from doing this there are certainly remedies available through the civil courts.
