With the birth our first baby next month I am intending to take paternity leave. I understand that my employer is not legally obliged to allow me to take two non-consecutive weeks of leave. However, is there anything preventing them from allowing me to take the two weeks as separate but whole weeks if it fits better with my workloads over this period and if my manager is also in agreement that it would work better? I have heard of several people taking non-consecutive weeks. Is it just that they work for particularly flexible and accommodating employers?

The statutory paternity leave is a minimum entitlement which must be offered by an employer. There is absolutely nothing to say that this can not be varied by agreement and providing your employer and you both agree on arrangements there is absolutely no problem
